Inlays and Onlays

If the decay in a tooth is too large for a filling to repair properly, but not large enough to warrant a full crown, your dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays are a prefabricated filling, customised to fit your cavity.

What is the difference between the two?

An inlay fits between the cusps of the tooth. Your dentist may use an onlay if the cusps of the tooth are damaged or need support. The onlay fits over one or more cusps to restore the chewing surface.

How are they different from fillings and crowns?

They are stronger and longer lasting than fillings and can be used when restoring large areas of tooth structure. They are also known as partial crowns because they are smaller and require less removal of tooth tissue, preserving as much tooth tissue as possible.

How does my dentist fit the inlay or onlay?

The dentist will numb the area around the tooth using a local anaesthetic. He or she then cleans out the cavity and takes a scan of the space, sending it to the dental lab for customisation.

At your next appointment, the dentist will fit the inlay or onlay over the tooth and cement it in place.

How long will an inlay or onlay last?

An inlay or onlay can remain in place up to 10+ years, assuming you take good care of it. Good habits and oral hygiene can help it last for as long as possible.

How do I care for an inlay or onlay?

You care for an inlay or onlay the same way you care for your regular teeth by cleaning and flossing daily and scheduling regular check-ups and professional cleanings at our practice.
